Stop Snoring & Sleep Apnoea

Snoring is a result of the soft tissue in your mouth and throat vibrating as air passes through, causing the snoring noise. When you are asleep the muscles around these structures are relaxed and thus allow your lower jaw and tongue to drop back and partially block the opening of your airway. More force is then required to push air through the blocked airway. The air moving is now quite fast and causes the soft tissues to vibrate; the sound that is caused as a result of this is what we know as snoring. Some of the factors that influence why some people snore and others don’t include; excess bodyweight, congestion, drug and alcohol use, aging and even swollen tonsils.

If you notice heavy snoring and postponed breathing of 10 seconds then that might be a more severe condition known as Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Patients with this condition can find that their blood oxygen levels are reduced which can cause the heart to pump much harder than normal. As a result this means that the patient does not get a good rest and after several years of this condition it can elevate blood pressure and heart enlargement can occur.

If the cause of the snoring and sleep apnoea is dentistry related then we are able to help you here at Bligh Park Dental, simply contact our helpful staff to arrange a consultation.
